OTHERWORLD - Secret Places and Talismans
Dilara Özkan Solo Exhibition
BASEMENT Berlin, January 19-20 2024
Curated by Andjani Autumn and Anika Krbetschek

  • "Otherworld", Dilara Özkan's first solo exhibition, aims to unveil the enigmatic aspects of existing in the physical world as well as in the otherworld. With a childlike curiosity for the natural sciences and a profound connection to invisible forces, Özkan delves into old tales, mythologies, and dreams. This exhibition serves as a thickly layered portal into the artist's creative process, where the space between birth and death becomes a source of inspiration. Özkan's work intimately engages with living bodies, decaying material and everyday findings, transforming them into mixed media talismans of diverse forms and giving each piece a cheeky little soul - if you allow yourself to see it, it will maybe wink at you.

  • Born of Turkish-Kurdish heritage, raised in Wiesbaden, and currently working in Berlin, Dilara Özkan's work transcends cultural boundaries and invites viewers on a profound exploration of metaphysical experiences.

  • The central theme of the exhibition is the exploration of metaphysical experiences. Sub-themes include the fusion of art and science, the use of mythology as a source of inspiration, and the transformation of organic and inorganic materials into art. Özkan's creations are showcased through various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and multimedia installations. The exhibition features a mix of traditional gallery displays, interactive installations, notebooks, and a performative presentation.
